Erosion
Driving Question:
Can you create an invention to help stop erosion at Woodland Elementary Charter School or anywhere else around the world? Project Summary:
Forces such as erosion, weathering, and the impact of organisms affect the world on a daily basis. Students will investigate forces such as erosion and how they impact Woodland Elementary Charter School. Students will work in a group to create an invention that helps stop the impact of erosion around WES or anywhere around the world. Each student will then create a presentation to present focusing on how to get others involved in implementing their invention. |
I will learn to:
-Ask questions and analyze data to classify rocks by their physical attributes (color, texture, luster, and hardness) using simple tests. -plan and carry out investigations to describe properties (color, texture, capacity to retain water, and ability to support growth of plants) of soils , and soil types (sand, clay, loam). -Make observations of the local environment to construct an explanation of how water and/or wind have made changes to soil and/or rocks over time. |
Products:
Prototype
You've been tasked with creating an invention that can help stop or slow the impact of erosion. Research the impact erosion has on the world around us using the resources below. Next, with your group, come up with an invention that can help stop or slow down the impact erosion. Then, sketch your design and be sure to include the location of your prototype and the materials needed to make it. Click on the title of this product for the rubric!
Questions to consider while planning your prototype:
Presentation
Now that you have come up with an invention to help slow down and/or stop erosion, you have been tasked with presenting your idea convincing others to use your invention. With your group you will choose how to present your information and some options include writing a speech, blog post, commercial/creating a public service announcement using imovie or touchcast, a TED talk, or digital presentation. Have another idea? Ask your teacher for permission!
